If jellyfish have no brains, can feel pain because their nervous systems, and do not know they exist?
To compensate for their lack basic sensory organs and the brain, the jellyfish exploits its nervous system and Rhopalias to perceive stimuli as light or odor, and orchestrate an appropriate response. Rhopalias (singular: rhopalium) are small structures and sensory cubozoan Scyphozoa jellyfish, Aurelia found in marginal indententions around the bell and are flanked by rhopalial skirts. Specialized structures to detect the ocelli (light) and the perceived seriousness (statoliths) are usually present. They also control the rate of contraction of the swimming muscles. Cubozoan ocelli are more complex than cnidarians, and are Similar to the image-forming eyes of squids, octopuses, and vertebrates.
